LE ISOLE KERGUELEN

Questo arcipelago di 7000 km2, grande poco meno della Corsica, riunisce la"Grande Terra" (l'isola più grande) e i molti isolotti che la circondano. Il monte Ross con i suoi 1850 metri è il punto più elevato dell'arcipelago. Le estati sono poco calde e gli inverni miti con precipitazioni abbondanti. I venti, violenti e costanti, soffiano ad una velocità media di 150 km/h con punte che possono arrivare anche a più di 200 km/h. La vegetazione è povera anche se sulle isole cresce il cavolo delle Kerguelen, specie endemica che si trova solo sull'arcipelago. La fauna comprende dei mammiferi marini, 32 specie di uccelli e 42 speci di pesci. Ci sono inoltre degli animali introdotti dall'uomo: gatti, conigli, montoni, mufloni e renne ormai inselvatichiti.
La base di Port aux Francais, costruita nel 1950, ospita una sessantina di persone durante l'inverno che diventano un centinaio nell'estate australe.

This archipelago of 7,000 km2, as big as Corsica, includes the "Great Land" (the largest island) and the many islets that surround it. Mount Ross with its 1850 meters is the highest point of the archipelago. The summers are not hot and winters are mild with heavy rainfall. The winds, violent and constant, blowing at an average speed of 150 km/h with peaks of 200 km/h. The vegetation is poor even if it grows on the islands the cabbage of Kerguelen, endemic species that is found only on the archipelago. The fauna includes marine mammals, 32 species of birds and 42 species of fish. There are also animals introduced by humans: cats, rabbits, sheep, wild sheep and reindeer that have now become wild.
The base of Port aux Francais, built in 1950, is home to about sixty people during the winter that become a hundred in the austral summer.
